The thing about loyalty points is that you can never really know whether they are worth the effort.
Think about your favourite airline or hotel chain. You’re a member of their loyalty scheme, so you get certain benefits. But are those benefits worth it?
Do the points you accrue with a premium airline really compensate you for the fact that you can get a cheaper, equally comfortable and efficient airfare elsewhere? Is it worth paying extra for a hotel room because there are bonus points to be had? Is that bowl of fruit that you’re probably not going to eat really an adequate reward for your blind dedication to a huge corporation that probably doesn’t have your best interests at heart?
Moreover: do you ever think of these things, or do you sign up and belong and play the points-accrual game because it’s fun, or you couldn’t be bothered to look elsewhere for a better travel experience than the one you already have?
I can’t tell you the answers, but I can recommend that you regularly asks these questions, because it’s a competitive industry and there is, almost always, a better deal to be had.
