Many travellers to London like to include a theatrical experience in their holiday itinerary. If you’re one of them, you might be wondering what the hot shows are.
Well, wonder no more. Here are some suggestions based on various authoritative sources. Many of these shows are long-running, or revivals, and I can vouch for quite a few of the shows (if not necessarily the productions).
Although it debuted 30 years ago, The Phantom of the Opera is still regarded by Time Out as one of the must-sees in London. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical still “works hard for its audience”, the magazine says.
Time Out also recommends Wicked, An Inspector Calls, Les Miserables, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, The Book of Mormon, Matilda the Musical, Motown the Musical and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
The Visit London website also suggests The Lion King, Aladdin, Mamma Mia! and Thriller Live.
For a laugh, many critics suggest The Play that Goes Wrong. And then, of course, there’s the evergreen, longest-running play ever, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap.
Ones to look out for include An American in Paris, which is inspired by the film of the same name and opening in London in March, and a revival of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which takes us behind the scenes in Hamlet, stars Daniel Radcliffe, and is previewing at the Old Vic from late February.

There’s surely something there for everyone.
