We know that air flight has become ridiculously affordable in recent years, but this story really underscores that.
In England, a young woman who wanted to catch a train from Newcastle to Birmingham to visit her friend discovered that it was cheaper for them both to fly to Spain.
According to this story, Lucy Walker was quoted £105 (US$127) for the journey by train, but she managed to fly from Newcastle to Malaga with RyanAir for less than £20 return. Her friend Zara Quli, paid £55.59 to fly from Birmingham to Malaga with Vueling.
Walker noted: “Trying to travel last-minute in the UK is always such a kick in the teeth as they put such a big premium on it.”
For the record, Birmingham to Newcastle is 200 miles (321 kilometres); the distance to Malaga is about 1,500 miles (2,415 km). And the weather in Malaga was a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius, in contrast to low single-digit temperatures in Birmingham.
