Are UFOs, or meteors, a danger to aviation?

A very bright light accelerating to twice the speed of sound caused momentary cause for concern for pilots over Ireland.

Was it a alien spaceship or, as officials suggest, a meteor that sped up once it hit Earth’s atmosphere.

According to reports, the phenomenon was seen by several pilots from different commercial aircraft in Irish airspace at the time. One noted that he was glad not to be the only one.

The pilot of  British Airways jet was the first to report, inquiring as to whether there was any military activity in the area.

She is heard saying in audio posted on the internet: “It came up on our left-hand side [rapidly veered] to the north, we saw a bright light and it just disappeared at a very high speed … we were just wondering. We didn’t think it was a likely collision course … [just wondering] what it could be.”

There are, of course, those quick to claim such a thing is evidence of UFO activity. Most scientists remain sceptical about that. Even if it was an alien craft, it didn’t interfere with the passenger jets, so that’s good news.

According to Scientific American, meteors have hit cars but there is no confirmed evidence of one hitting a plane and causing it to crash. However, some people do think a meteor was to blame for the downing of TWA Flight 800 in 1996. That possibility is canvassed at some length here.

This non-expert suggests that it’s something about which one should not worry.
