Back to the future

While the prospect of supersonic flight intrigues me, I’m not so sure I’d want to fly on an aircraft called Boom.

But it seems that Boom, a company founded by former Amazon executive Blake Scholl, will be the first to make  affordable ultrafast commercial flight available.

Sir Richard Branson obviously thinks so. His Virgin Galactic company has thrown its support behind Boom, which plans to offer 3hr-15min London to New York flights by 2023.

Trans-Atlantic flights will, apparently, cost about US$5,000, which is cheaper than British Airways and Air France used to charge for Concorde, which was retired in 2003. Other routes, including Sydney to Tokyo, are being considered.

The Boom planes will feature cosy interiors with 40 or 50 seats.

On its website, Boom claims its planes will fly at Mach 2.2, compared to a conventional airliner’s maximum cruising speed of Mach 0.85. A smaller version of its proposed plane will soon be conducting test flights over Seattle and Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California.

With Boeing and Lockheed-Martin also reportedly working on supersonic planes, it seems there is no doubt that flight faster than the speed of sound will be commercially viable. Whether it will be available by 2023 is somewhat up in the air.
