One bad choice can spoil a whole holiday. Had it been my intention to stay in Genoa (Genova) for a few days, then the hotel I chose would have been a disaster.
But I chose the Best Western Airport Hotel purely because, as its name suggests, it’s close to the airport. I knew I’d be exhausted after flying from Abu Dhabi to Munich, and then taking two more flights across the day (with many hours of waiting time in between) to get to the Italian Riviera.
If Genoa had been my final destination, I would have been annoyed to find myself in the rundown part of town around the port and airport. As it was, the 15-euro cab fare for a one-kilometre journey was pain enough (the diver insisted that was the minimum fare, even though the meter read 10 euro — and it only got there a 5-euro flagfall and 3-euro supplement).
There’s nothing wrong with the hotel, it’s just situated in an industrial wasteland. As I tweeted at the time: “I have seen some beautiful pictures of Genoa. None of them were taken near my hotel.”
But I decided to use lemons to make lemonade, so I took these pictures — most of them were augmented with filters — of the walk to the train station and the early part of my journey by rail to Savona.
