Japan Airlines has reportedly announced that it will allow dogs to travel in the passenger cabin on certain charter flights.
I suppose that’s good news for some pet lovers, and it’s not uncommon to see pets on planes in some parts of the world, notably the United States. But, as much as I like animals, I’d hate to see this idea extended to all flights, because I don’t think it’s fair on other passengers.
I’ve already written about an incident I witnessed on a cruise ship involving an “emotional support animal”, and I imagine that a dog defecating on a plane would be an even messier, smellier and unhygienic experience for all concerned.
An airline official is quoted as saying: “Air travel with pets will lead to the opening of new markets for domestic flights.”
I suppose it will, but will it be a bigger turnoff for those of us — including people with allergies and phobias — who don’t want to be near other people’s pets on planes?
Pets on planes = mid-air altercations waiting to happen. Ugh, terrible idea. Better to allow pet owners to ride down below in cargo.
I would refuse to be on a plane with an animal.
