I’ve spent most of the past decade, and a few scattered years before then, as an expatriate or itinerant traveller.

And anyone who’s been in my shoes knows that, for the most part, the experience is wonderful. But for some people, especially those on low wages or in retirement, living abroad can be a matter of making the best of a not-ideal situation.

What to do about expats behaving badly?

Have you heard the one about the Ugly Australian abroad? I was reminded of this when a friend told me that he could never live in Thailand because of the way the expatriate community behaves.

Having spent a lot of time in Thailand — and in other places where expats dwell — I have to say that I understand what he means. And it’s not just Aussies who are behaving badly.
