Travelling north

The thing about being an Australian with a taste for travel is that it’s all too easy, and extremely tempting, to jump onto a plane tosee the world without first seeing your own country.

Although I’ve done a lot of travel within the great big, broad, brown land, there are parts I’ve missed or neglected — including northern and far north Queensland, in my own home state.

The southern winter would be a great time for anybody in a similar position to rectify that omission.

While there is always something going on up north, two events happening mid-year are illustrative of the variety of activities on offer.

They are the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, held from July 14-17, and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, in and around Townsville from July 29 to August 6.

The former is a platform for Aboriginal and Torres Strait visual art, performance, music and fashion, and the latter includes more than 30 concerts under the artistic stewardship of world renowned classical pianist Piers Lane.

And, of course, both Cairns and Townsville are gateways to the glorious (but endangered) Great Barrier Reef. More information about Queensland holidays is available here.
