When will flights be faster?

Ever since commercial air travel became a reality, we have been teased by the promise of faster and faster flight times.

In the 1970s, it became a reality with supersonic flight on Concorde. But only two airlines ever offered the service, it wasn’t commercially viable and, after a big accident, it was discontinued.

So in a world where we expect everything to be better, what is next?

Well, acording to some reports, it’s a plane that can take us from New York to London in just 20 minutes.

The Antipode, designed by CanadianĀ Charles Bombardier, will apparently fly atĀ 16,000 miles (25,000 kilometres) per hour, which is 24 times faster than the speed of sound. There’s more about it here.

Will we see it — or any of the other promised supersonic solutions — soon? Only time will tell.
